When you think of summer in Kyoto, many people will picture the sight of "Nouryouka" (cozy platforms) lined up along the Kamo River. During the Noryoyuka season, long-established restaurants along the Kamo River welcome guests to their outdoor terrace seats, which are only available during the summer. This event, which takes place every year from May to the end of September, has a long history of about 400 years.
The origin of noryo-yuka dates back to the early Edo period. At the time, more and more people were cooling off by the Kamo River, and teahouses along the river set up simple tatami rooms. Since then, it has developed over time into its current form.
Approximately 90 Noryo-yuka (relaxing platforms) are lined up along the 1.8 km stretch of Kamo River from Shijo Ohashi Bridge to Gojo Ohashi Bridge. Located just a few dozen centimeters above the river surface, the platforms offer a panoramic view of the flowing Kamo River and the greenery of Higashiyama on the opposite bank.
The appeal of the noryo-yuka is the Kyoto cuisine you can enjoy in a cool space. You can enjoy seasonal kaiseki cuisine that will make you forget the heat of summer, dishes made with river fish, cold noodles, and other flavors that are unique to Kyoto. The taste of summer while feeling the murmuring of the river and the cool breeze is exceptional.
