There are many shops and commercial buildings around Machida Station, and it is always crowded with people. Machida Pario (hereinafter, Pario), a commercial facility in a corner of the building district, has been in business for about half a century and is an essential part of Machida's history.
The star of this event, the entertainment restaurant "Mahoroza MACHIDA" (hereinafter referred to as "Mahoroza"), is located on the basement floor of the Palio.
The story of "Mahoroza" cannot be told without mentioning Palio. Palio opened in 1975 as a pioneering fashion building stocked with fashionable items. At the time of its opening, it was apparently a popular date spot for young people living in Machida.
For decades, Palio has been watching the changes in Machida from the same location. In the words of Ryo Sasaki, manager of Mahoroza, "For locals, it's not super famous, but it's a familiar place."
Creating an entertainment restaurant where people of all ages could gather and enjoy themselves inside the Palio was an idea that Megumi Nakamura, owner of Mahoroza, had been thinking about for many years.
After that, the restaurants in Palio decided to withdraw, so Nakamura decided to open a restaurant in its place. At the time, there were voices of opposition saying that it would not be profitable, but Nakamura's passion was so strong that he overcame those voices and started construction. Pushed by that passion, "Mahoroza" opened in 2015.
The name "Mahoroza" comes from Shion Miura's work "Mahoro Ekimae Tada Benriken." The word "Mahoroba" is an archaic word meaning "wonderful place," and it is a play on Palio's wish for a "wonderful place where people of all ages can gather."
Since its opening, one of the most important themes at Mahoroza is the phrase "BE MY STAR." Sasaki says that this phrase expresses his wish that "Mahoroza is a place where anyone can become a star."
"Mahoroza is a rare venue where everyone from local dad bands to nationally renowned singers can share the same stage. Therefore, I want Mahoroza to be a place where both the audience and the performers can shine. With this wish in mind, I cherish the theme of "BE MY STAR."
As the words suggest, Mahoroza strives to give as many people as possible the opportunity to perform and express themselves in the way they want to. To allow a wide variety of people to take to the stage, they set a wide range of genres for the live shows they hold, and they value a stance of actively supporting artists' proposals. A major feature of Mahoroza is that you can enjoy a wide range of performances, not just music, such as rakugo, theater, and flamenco.
A place where anyone can become a star. And a place where loved ones can see them shining. This is what supports the warm atmosphere of Mahoroza.
A place where people of all ages can gather and have fun. And a place where you can become a star and shine. Because we value this stance, Mahoroza is a place where many different people intersect and sometimes shows unexpected scenes.
For example, the Machida Girls Choir is a chorus group from Machida that was formed at the same time as the Mahoroza Theater was launched. Mr. Sasaki was involved as a producer, and they have been performing on stage since the Mahoroza Theater first opened.
They started off with no audience at all. Still, Machida Girls Choir held regular live shows at Mahoroza, gradually increasing the number of attendees. Eventually, they were successful in holding a sold-out live show at Machida Civic Hall. It was the moment a star was born at Mahoroza in both name and reality.
Mahoroza has also become an important place in Sasaki's life. Sasaki had been active as a musician as a member of the band Kinmokusei, but when he started working with Mahoroza, Kinmokusei was on hiatus and there was no prospect of them resuming activities. However, Mahoroza played a major role in Kinmokusei's decision to resume activities.
"During the band's hiatus, myself and the other members performed at Mahoroza in various ways. Having a place to connect with each other in small ways helped to thaw the ice between the members, which I think was the catalyst for us to resume our activities."
Kinmokusei resumed activities in 2018. Mahoroza was involved as part of the production team for the live concert at Sagamihara Civic Hall when Kinmokusei resumed activities, which shows that Mahoroza had a major influence on Kinmokusei's resumption of activities.
New challenges open up a wider view than we could have ever imagined. Things that had once stopped start moving again. Mahoroza is the starting point where people gather and form connections, bringing brightness to many lives.
Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the Palio and the 10th anniversary of Mahoroza. When asked what kind of place he would like Mahoroza to become, Sasaki said, "I want it to be a place where people can come back anytime."
"By continuing Mahoroza for a long time, I hope that people will reminisce about how they used to come here often in the old days, and then bring their own children to Mahoroza, or that the children of the performers will start working at Mahoroza, and that it will remain as a place that people used to visit often in the past.
I would also be very happy if the people who have been involved with us as staff, performers, or audience members would come back to Mahoroza after going through a few cycles in life. That's why I want Mahoroza to continue to be a place people can come back to."
We want Mahoroza to be a wonderful place where three generations can gather. This simple wish is sublimated into the warm glow that Mahoroza emits today, little by little brightening someone's life.
