More than just ingredients for confectionery and bread making. The birthplace of Tomizawa Shoten, packed with the "essence of deliciousness."

Near Machida Station, along the old Machida Road, a bustling thoroughfare, stands a striking storehouse-style building: "Tomizawa Shoten Machida Main Store." This is the birthplace of the brand, founded in 1919 (Taisho 8) as a dried seafood store, and now serves as the flagship store for the company, which operates 94 stores nationwide.

The store stocks approximately 3,200 different products, ranging from confectionery and bread-making ingredients to Japanese sweets ingredients, high-quality dried seafood (the store's origin), and a wide variety of cooking utensils. Throughout its more than 100-year history, the store has continued to offer the joy of handmade creations and the rich pleasure of food.

"Fair business practices" nurtured at a transportation hub.

The history of Machida is deeply reflected in the background of Tomizawa Shoten's founding as a dried seafood store. This area, which once prospered from sericulture, was an important transportation hub for sending raw silk from the inland areas to Yokohama Port. As traveling merchants returning from Yokohama brought back dried seafood such as kelp, many dried goods stores naturally began to line the streets of Machida.

Among the many stores, Tomizawa Shoten sourced high-quality products from places like Tsukiji and Nihonbashi, portioned them into convenient sizes for home use, and offered them at affordable prices. Through this philosophy of "fair trade," which has been upheld since its founding, and its rational sales methods, the store established a unique presence. This spirit, which has fostered deep trust with customers across generations, is still deeply rooted in the store's operations today.

Looking ahead to the growing culture of homemade goods

The sale of dried goods in small portions, a practice that has continued since the store's founding, has expanded to include ingredients for confectionery and bread making. This has become a signature service of the store today, and the background to this success lies in the foresight shown in anticipating changing times.

Tomizawa Shoten had been handling imported wheat flour for commercial use since the 1950s, but at that time, the culture of baking bread at home was not yet common. Nevertheless, they foresaw that bread making would eventually spread to Japanese households, and that the demand for high-quality ingredients used by professionals would increase.

Around 1970, when home ovens began to become widespread, we started selling commercial-grade flour in smaller quantities. Currently, we offer a wide variety of commercial-grade flours in convenient sizes for home use.

We offer the reliable quality of a specialty store in the "optimal quantity" that fits into your daily life. This approach embodies the long-standing desire of our company to make the joy of handmade products more accessible to everyone.

From confectionery tools to seasonal ingredients. A place for food producers to gather and converse.

The entire wall at the back of the store is lined with a wide array of specialized confectionery tools. Such an extensive lineup is a symbolic sight of the flagship store, "Machida Main Store."

At the store, various conversations take place between customers and staff as the seasons change. In the spring, students from nearby confectionery schools come to buy mousse film (transparent film used for mousse cake molds), and in the winter, they come to buy Noël boxes (rectangular cake boxes).

Furthermore, from late autumn to early winter, it becomes more common for long-time customers to ask the staff questions such as, "When will this year's new crop of beans arrive?" and "How is the quality of the black beans for New Year's?"

Many people eagerly await the arrival of new beans from late autumn to early winter, a testament to the quality of these beans.
