It is one station away from Machida and about a 4-minute walk from the north exit of Tsurugaoka Station on the Odakyu Line.

As you walk up the gentle slope, you will come across a historic mansion that will make you exclaim, "Wow!" This is Tsurukawa Kozanen.

Originally a beloved moxibustion center (moxibustion treatment center) in operation since the Edo period, the building was beloved by local residents, but closed in 2015. The main house and garden were then taken over by Machida City, and the cocre Tsurukawa Joint Venture (representative company: Keep Will Dining Co., Ltd., constituent company: Fuji Ueki Co., Ltd.) was entrusted with its operation, and it was reopened as Tsurukawa Kosanen in January 2025.

The main building, built in the Shoin-style architecture with a majestic entrance hall reminiscent of shrine and temple architecture and a massive copper roof, is home to the restaurant "Oubai Touri," where you can enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine. It is a space where you can relax and enjoy lunch, dinner, or coffee while looking out at the strolling garden surrounding the pond.

"The name 'Oume Touji' comes from the cherry blossom, plum, peach, and plum trees that symbolize the four seasons in Japan. Just as various flowers bloom in each season, our guests have various reasons and backgrounds for visiting. We wanted to be able to accommodate each and every one of them and help them have a fun time. This is the thought behind the name."

That's what restaurant manager Yamazaki Koichi said.

Their commitment to the seasons is also evident in their cuisine. The restaurant's selling point is their "lunch menu," where you can choose between meat or fish as your main dish. The appetizer, "hassun," incorporates seasonal ingredients and is slightly changed in content.

In addition, the ingredients of the freshly cooked clay pot rice that comes with the "lunch course" change with each season, with chestnuts in autumn and corn in summer. Everywhere you go, the restaurant is packed with ideas to allow you to experience the changing of the seasons with every visit.

Another feature of the restaurant is that it uses ingredients from Machida and the surrounding area as much as possible, selecting ingredients from local producers that are best suited to the dishes and incorporating them into the menu.

The restaurant has gained a reputation for its delicious food and comfortable atmosphere, and is now a beloved restaurant in Tsurukawa.

After reopening in January 2025, the restaurant's reputation has gradually spread, and now there are more and more days when the restaurant is fully booked, especially for lunch.

"In our case, a lot of our customers come by word of mouth," says Yamazaki. The circle of fans has naturally expanded, with customers mainly from the middle-aged to senior generations saying things like, "I heard about it from a friend," or "I came here with a friend for lunch before, and now I'm bringing my family."

"Many people know that the mansion exists, but have never actually been inside."

So says Emi Shioiri, who is in charge of the overall management of Tsurukawa Kosanen. She says that when people step inside the lush garden, they often hear comments like, "I had no idea a place like this existed," and "I'm so happy that a new attraction has opened."

"We hope to create a place where heartfelt Japanese flavor and hospitality, as well as a well-maintained garden, all resonate with each other in a positive way," the couple said with a smile.

Nestled on a quiet hill in Tsurukawa, Sakuraume Tohri is sure to become a new attraction in the Tsurukawa area, bringing new discoveries and a sense of peace with every visit.
