NEIGHBORS
It's a 17-minute walk from Omoromachi Station on the monorail. You'll pass by San-A Naha Main Place, a supermarket that supports the lives of locals, and Shintoshin Park, a bustling area of walking and running areas, and then go through a residential area lined with condominiums with exposed concrete and colorful decorations that give it a "tropical" feel, before you see the cafe decorated with red and white bricks.
That place is Cafe ONE OR EIGHT.
I want to create a third space where people can feel at ease even when they are alone.
I visited at 10am on a weekday. Inside the store, there were people working or studying with a cup of coffee, or eating a meal while browsing the magazines on display, all enjoying their time in their own way.
The kitchen appears to be located just behind the counter where you order drinks and food, and the cheerful shouts of the staff, the clatter of dishes being washed, and the delicious smells of cooking fill the air.
<There were delicious looking breads lined up on the counter.>
"Despite the large number of people here, the atmosphere is quite relaxed. The concept of the café is to be a 'third space that is neither home nor work,' so many people come here to enjoy some alone time."
This was explained to us by the store manager, Mr. Miyagi, who has been involved with the store since it opened in 2002.
"The owner who founded the cafe told me that he wanted to create a cafe that would support business people. At the time, in the central and northern parts of the prefecture, where there were many immigrants from outside the prefecture, Seattle-style cafes with a relaxed atmosphere where you could enjoy espresso coffee were gradually increasing in number. But there were hardly any places like that in Naha.
"I want to create a place in Naha where people can work or read while drinking delicious coffee."
And so Cafe ONE OR EIGHT was started."
The cafe offers plenty of services that will allow you to stay for a long time with peace of mind!
People come to Cafe ONE OR EIGHT for a variety of reasons: some to work, study, read, or just enjoy some alone time, while others come to enjoy spending time with family and friends.
"The concept is 'a third space where you can relax even if you're alone,' but people other than yourself are also welcome! The cafe is divided into the first and second floors, with sofas and table seating on the first floor and counter seating on the second floor. 'If you want to concentrate on work, sit at the counter on the second floor,' or 'If you want to enjoy tea with friends, sit on the lively first floor.' It can be used for a variety of occasions."
<Counter seats where you can relax and work while enjoying the view outside>
<On the second floor, there are also rental booths that can be used for up to 3 hours for 500 yen (tax included), and for 3 hours or more for free time for 800 yen (tax included).>
I love spending time alone, but spending time with family and friends is also important. Cafe ONE OR EIGHT has many ideas to support you in spending your time in a way that suits you.
"We have free Wi-Fi available in the store so that you can spend long periods of time here comfortably. There are also power outlets at the counter seats.
In addition, we have magazines, newspapers, and popular books that you can read freely in the bar, and we also offer a service where all drinks from the second drink onwards are half price."
<There are plenty of books and magazines available to browse in the store!>
<You can enjoy freshly brewed coffee at half price from the second cup onwards>
<There is also a bulletin board corner introducing nearby shops and events. The latest information from within the prefecture is gathered here.>
As the cafe is located in a residential area, most of the customers are locals, but it also seems to be frequented by tourists with suitcases.
"There is a bus stop right in front of the shop, and there is a bus that goes to Naha Airport. So I think it is convenient for tourists to use. Also, the shop is made of glass so you can see inside from the outside, so even first-time customers can feel comfortable coming in."
The best part of traveling is experiencing something out of the ordinary in a lively place. But spending time blending into the "everyday life" of the town will also enrich your trip. Why not experience the everyday life of Naha at Cafe ONE OR EIGHT, a place loved by locals for over 20 years?
