What are the characteristics and history of Ryu Spa's products, which are packed with the bounty of Okinawa's nature? We spoke to them at Ryu Spa Naha Main Branch, located about a 15-minute walk or monorail ride from HOTEL RESOL TRINITY NAHA.

The abundant natural blessings of Kumi Island

The factory where Ryu Spa products are made is located on Kumejima, an island about 30 minutes by plane from Naha. Kumejima is an island surrounded by crystal clear waters and such abundant nature that the entire island has been designated a prefectural natural park. Due to its beauty, it is also known as "Kumi Island."

This is what Shimoji from Ryu Spa Naha Main Branch told us. Deep ocean water is seawater that is below a depth of 200m, where sunlight does not reach. Because it is low-temperature seawater where light does not reach, plankton and bacteria do not multiply easily, and it has a good mineral balance, is very clean, and is rich in nutrients.

In addition to deep sea water, Ryu Spa also contains plenty of other "gifts of nature."

"Next to the Ryu Spa factory is a sea grape and mozuku factory. The mozuku and sea grapes grown in the deep sea water of Kumejima grow better than regular ones. We use the sea grapes and mozuku harvested there for our sheet masks. We also use other natural ingredients that thrive in the strong Okinawan sunshine, such as shekwasha, shell ginger, aloe vera, and acerola. Body-friendly cosmetics born from the founder's concerns
Ryu Spa was founded in 2001. The founder of Ryu Spa originally ran a barber and beauty salon on Kumejima. However, he had been suffering from rough hands due to years of working with water. "I want to use safe and secure products for both my customers and myself." From this experience, the founder created Ryu Spa, a natural cosmetic brand made from natural ingredients from Okinawa.

"Our first product was a gel called 'Point Pure Gel' made almost entirely from deep sea water. Even now, more than 20 years after its release, it remains a popular product with a steady stream of repeat buyers," says Shimoji.

Currently, they carry over 100 different products, all of which are made with the same passion they have had since the company was founded. Shimoji-san, who guided us around this time, was originally a fan of Ryu Spa.

"Actually, I used to work for Ryu Spa's OEM (a company that manufactures products for other companies on a contract basis). I was able to see the manufacturing process, so I was attracted to their cosmetics and thought, 'These are cosmetics that are made with great care,' and I used them often in my private life." (Shimoji)

Shimoji's love for Ryu Spa led him to transfer to the company seven years ago. He usually works in corporate sales at the Naha main store, but sometimes also serves customers at the store. The Naha main store where Shimoji works is about a one-minute walk from Asato Station on the Yui Rail.
