Motherhouse, which has the philosophy of "creating a globally recognized brand from a developing country," operates "Motherhouse Last Item Store" in Akihabara, Taito Ward, a place that supports the culture of craftsmanship, and does its best to deliver every last item. This store is based on the concept of collecting products with less than 10 left in stock nationwide and allowing customers to discover them.
The restaurant will celebrate its first anniversary in March 2024, and we spoke to Nana Negata, who has been the owner since April, about her thoughts and attention to detail until the very last dish is served.
A display where bags made with carefully selected materials and shapes can take center stage
"In a normal store, the theory is to put new products and seasonal products at the forefront. Products that were released earlier often have to be taken off the shelves because there isn't enough space in the store. Even though their value hasn't decreased..." Negata explained the challenges of retail stores.
Next, we will touch on the thoughts behind "The Last Shop."
"Of course, the new products are the result of improvements that reflect customer feedback, but that doesn't mean that everyone will like them. Some customers say that the previous product was easier to use, so it was frustrating."
The store has a sign with the concept, "The last store."
"In March 2023, during the online broadcast announcing the opening of the store, a customer who spotted a bag that was briefly captured on camera contacted us. She said, 'I've found the bag I've been looking for! I thought I'd never come across it again.' That was the moment I became convinced of the significance of this store."
They intentionally try not to arrange the products too tightly in the store so that customers can easily pick up the products.
If you miss your chance at "The Last One" you will never find it again. Some people come searching for the one item they are looking for, while others have chance encounters.
"There was a time when the name of a bag was the same as the name of a customer. When I told the customer about it, he felt like it was fate. Although he had originally come to the store looking for a different bag, he ended up buying the bag with the same name."
"When I send out "The Last One," I feel like a foster parent. I translate the maker's thoughts and passion for the product to suit the customer. Maybe it's because I remember the long, long journey from the development of the ingredients to the delivery of the last product to the customer."
A message from Motherhouse's president, Eriko Yamaguchi, is also attached next to the product.
The last remaining item will be tagged as "the last one." This is a collaboration with a gold leaf stamping shop in the Kachikura area.
"The Last Shop" also sells jewelry
The owner, Negata-san, has been involved since the restaurant opened, as he sympathizes with the concept of "one last restaurant."
The activity of delivering the last item is not limited to within the store. Under the title "The Last One-item Store that 'Goes Around'", the concept and spirit of "The Last One-item Store" is being rolled out to stores nationwide.
"To implement this, we listen to the managers of other stores to find out what their customers need, and then send out products from Akihabara that are suited to each store," says Negata.
Furthermore, we are keen to collaborate with creators in the Kachikura area.
"There are many fascinating creators in the Tokura area. By collaborating with them, we hope to bring their value and charm to many people. For Motherhouse, Taito Ward is the origin of the first store, and we believe that this is also where we will take on new challenges."
"Motherhouse Last Item Shop" is a place where all products take center stage, where you can rediscover the value of things and cherish them. There may be a product waiting for you to come and pick it up here.
