Located a four-minute walk from Nagoya Station, HOTEL RESOL NAGOYA has a jazz-themed space in the second floor lobby. A carefully selected selection of records is on display, allowing you to enjoy live music. This time, we will introduce "SON OF THREE SOUNDS," a record specialty store located in the same downtown Nagoya that loves music and has maintained high-quality sound. With 43 years of history, the owner has been exposed to a wide range of music, so we will delve deeper into the appeal of "SON OF THREE SOUNDS," offering high-quality sound and new music encounters that can only be offered by a store owner who has been exposed to a wide range of music.
Sound is a part of life
The owner, Yasuo Mizobuchi, used to frequent jazz and rock cafes from a young age. He was born in Kyoto and grew up in Nagoya. At the time, jazz and rock cafes were popular, and there were many jazz and rock cafes in Nagoya. The owner of the cafe I often visited was very unique and taught me many things. I spent my days listening to the music playing there and discovering new songs. Until the 1970s, there were no second-hand record stores, and when I bought records, I bought them just by looking at the jacket without listening to them, so I often made mistakes because the music was different from what I had imagined. From there, I started buying a lot of records and became obsessed with music. Mizobuchi's wide range of music knowledge, cultivated by listening to so many records, is impressive. Before I knew it, I would often take notes on the music labels and producers written on the back of the records. Eventually, I got to the point where I could tell what kind of atmosphere the song had when I looked at the records.
Within a limited time, he carefully considers each record.
Mizobuchi says that he carefully looks after each record, one by one, to protect "the raw music that remains in the records." He carefully cleans and dries each record, and listens to them to make sure there are no skips. Because he runs the store by himself, it takes a long time to get the records on the shelves. There is a limit to the amount he can do in a day, but the owner's uncompromising attitude towards music leads to a deeper musical atmosphere that is born through the records. It's amazing how, thanks to that, he has never had a complaint about skips.
Another thing the owner is particular about is that he mainly stocks records made before 1978. It is said that digital recording began after 1980. Therefore, records released before 1978 have a sense of depth and three-dimensionality in the sound, and you can listen to a sound that is closer to the original sound.
SON OF THREE SOUNDS in Nagoya is a must-visit place for vinyl enthusiasts, with high-quality records that are carefully handled. Even if you're just starting to get into vinyl, you can still find records at reasonable prices, so it's definitely a place you should visit.
In Nagoya, he will act as a musical guide, like a hotel concierge.
We try not to approach people who come to the store for the first time. When a new record comes in, we prepare it for display, thinking about the song that we would like that particular customer to hear. "It's a lot of fun thinking about the next development of the music I'm going to suggest to customers," says the owner. Mr. Mizobuchi has listened to a lot of music, so he is able to suggest music that suits each individual. If you visit the store, why not talk to the owner, Mr. Mizobuchi, and seize the opportunity to discover new music.
