Tsuruma in Nagoya City is an area centered around the lush Tsuruma Park, and is a peaceful town where you can see families and couples having fun on the weekends. The area around the park is lined with delicious restaurants and stylish select shops, and the lively Osu Shopping Street is within walking distance. Located in this area, Slome is a shop run by illustrator Akinori Nishio, where you can freely enjoy silkscreen printing. The shop supports the creative activities of a wide range of people, from beginners to professionals, and new things are born every day.
Nishio was originally a customer of the Osaka silkscreen shop "Slimacca," and used his own illustrations to create original goods. Before he discovered silkscreen printing, Nishio felt that making things was too difficult. However, once he actually tried it, he realized that "it's surprisingly easy to make whatever you want." Wanting to spread the joy of silkscreen printing in his hometown of Gifu, he decided to start his own shop.
Even today, the idea that "creating is fun" is the driving force behind conveying the charm of silkscreen to many people. Since its founding in Gifu, the studio has moved to Tsurumai, Nagoya, and continues to be loved by many as an art studio, encouraging people to take their first steps in the world of craftsmanship.
"Slome" is a place where people can come together through craftsmanship. On weekdays, local shop owners come to make original goods. For example, they can make a variety of items such as T-shirts and eco-bags printed with their shop logos. On weekends, tourists come and create special items as mementos of their trip. Nishio supports all customers so that they can experience the fun of silkscreen printing, even beginners can enjoy the experience with confidence.
When creating original goods at Slome, you can either draw your own picture or choose from illustrations drawn by Nishio. You can choose as many of the illustrations as you like, and Nishio will arrange them according to the size of the plate.
The plate is completed on the spot, and the silkscreen experience begins immediately. This convenience is one of the reasons why "Slome" is popular with many people. It is affordable, and you can print designs of various sizes, so it is full of excitement. "I'm happy to be able to help with manufacturing," says Nishio, smiling, which makes an impression.
Slome is visited by customers who use silkscreen printing in a variety of ways. For example, there are people who come to make original tote bags as wedding favors, elderly people who come to make fabric with original patterns, and parents who want to make T-shirts from their children's drawings. Support is provided according to the needs of each customer.
Nishio-san said with a smile, "I'm aiming to create an arts room for adults." He continued, "Isn't an arts room exciting? A place where you can return to your childhood and enjoy making things. That's the kind of place I want to create." As the words suggest, Slome is a special place where new things are born for visitors, and it serves as a base for creative activities for people who work and live in the area.
