Yoake is an abandoned school cafe located within walking distance of Nagoya Station. It is located on the first floor of the Nagoya Campus, an incubation facility renovated from the former Nagoya Elementary School, and is a cafe restaurant renovated from what was once the school cafeteria.
It is operated by Holidays Co., Ltd., which also operates the popular Nagoya-based ohagi specialty store "OHAGI3." You can also enjoy the homemade red bean paste used at "OHAGI3," which values being "kind to the body and the earth." The homemade red bean paste, made with domestically produced azuki beans and cooked with unrefined raw sugar, has a gentle flavor and is a must-try if you come to Nagoya.
In the morning, you can enjoy the Nagoya culture of breakfast, and in the afternoon, you can enjoy a different lunch every day, just like a school lunch. Don't miss the keema curry with 34 different beans served on the dinner menu.
Yoake's homemade bean paste was created with the desire to create something that children can eat without worry. It is characterized by the use of mineral-rich raw sugar and a modest sweetness with a sugar content of 47 to 49 degrees. Sweets with a high sugar content feel special, but Yoake's homemade bean paste is modestly sweet, as they value the fact that it can be eaten every day. It is good for the body and the sweetness fits into everyday life, filling both the body and mind with a sense of security. They are also particular about making it by hand, so in addition to its beautiful appearance, you can also feel the warm, handmade "taste".
Hirokazu Ochiai is the representative of Holidays Co., Ltd., which operates the popular ohagi specialty store "OHAGI3" and "yoake." His passion and depth for food can be seen in the vision he aims for. During his university days, Ochiai pursued "food" while making a total of 3 million takoyaki at commercial facilities around the world. The worldview he aims for is, if likened to the story of Momotaro, not "work together with friends to defeat the demon," but "offer kibi dango to the demon and live happily ever after." The energy of joy is expressed through "food" in the bite-sized menus of "OHAGI3" and "yoake."
When Ochiai first founded the company, he wanted to create a place where people could gather, and Yoake is the place where that dream has come true. Yoake is located in a former elementary school, which is an office building that is also open to the public. Despite its unique location, it is also a meeting point for locals and a tourist spot, making it a place where people from all walks of life can come together.
It is also an experimental space, where new menu developments take place, so it is a place where new challenges come up every day. Organic matcha and roasted green tea are standard at OHAGI3, but at Yoake, they use milk bottles as containers, taking advantage of the fact that it was once a school cafeteria. Not only is it enjoyable to look at and taste, but it is also a space that gently embraces visitors. That is the abandoned school cafe Yoake.
