Special event by calligrapher Tomotake Watanabe

Calligrapher Tomotake Watanabe will be holding a calligraphy performance and workshop on October 14th (Wed) and 15th (Thu), 2026.
The event will take place in the living lobby of HOTEL RESOL UENO. It is open to both hotel guests and the general public.
We also provide information in English, so international visitors can enjoy their experience with peace of mind.
Why not experience the profound charm of Japanese culture by "seeing" and "experiencing" calligraphy?

This project came about thanks to our connection with artist Aki Iwakawa, who exhibited her work at HOTEL RESOL UENO 's lobby gallery, "Resol Gallery Ueno," in June of this year.
Resol Gallery Ueno, which has previously offered opportunities to become familiar with culture through art, will now welcome calligrapher Tomotake Watanabe to give participants the chance to experience calligraphy firsthand and become familiar with Japanese culture.

A calligraphy performance unfolds before your eyes.

Two artworks will be created over two days in the hotel's living lobby. You can watch up close as the artist moves the brush with large strokes, completing each piece one by one, and capture the process in photos and videos.

Your favorite letters can be used in the artwork.

A look at the experience

A look at the experience

In this workshop, you'll pick up a brush yourself and experience calligraphy, writing your favorite kanji characters or your own name in kanji, and creating a finished piece on a decorative paper board or fan. We also offer guidance in English, so even international visitors can experience the charm of calligraphy.

Calligrapher Tomotake Watanabe

Calligrapher and Doctor of Calligraphy. Member of the Nitten Exhibition (8 times selected for exhibition), Director of the Yomiuri Calligraphy Association, Standing Director of the Kenshin Calligraphy Association, Part-time lecturer at Takushoku University, and head of the Roppongi Fugaku Calligraphy Classroom.
Based on academic research into classical calligraphy and ancient characters, he develops unique activities that fuse the beauty of traditional calligraphy with modern expression. In 2021, to commemorate the world's fastest supercomputer "Fugaku," he donated and inscribed a large-scale work measuring 10 meters to the RIKEN Institute. Since 2022, he has led the selection and exhibition of 10 Japanese representative artists at the international exchange exhibition held annually in Busan, South Korea.
In March 2025 and August 2026, we conducted calligraphy tours to Denmark and Norway, successfully collaborating with local galleries and architectural firms, performing live calligraphy demonstrations, and conducting workshops. In June 2025, we provided calligraphy instruction to Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, and have since conducted numerous instructional and performance sessions for foreigners both domestically and internationally, actively promoting the appeal of Japanese calligraphy to the world.
