Since its opening as a port in 1859 (Ansei 6), Yokohama has served as Japan's main gateway, becoming a trading hub that sent goods all over the world. The port once boasted of its raw silk, which recorded the world's largest export volume. As processing technology for raw silk developed, the elegant "Yokohama scarf" was eventually born.
There is a shop that carries on the aesthetics honed alongside the history of this port town. Located in Landmark Plaza, "Traditional Yokohama Scarf Marca" has been dedicated to showcasing the inherent beauty of silk for over 70 years since its founding after the war.
Even in today's increasingly efficient world, what remains important is the craftsmanship of skilled artisans. Our commitment to preserving traditional techniques and pursuing honest, unwavering craftsmanship remains unshaken. Each garment, dyed with expert skill, will lightly and beautifully enhance our everyday attire and travel wear.

The quality of the "Traditional Yokohama Scarf Marca" is supported by a technique called "hand-printing," which has been passed down since the early Showa period.
The process begins with "ground stretching," where the fabric is spread out on a table that is 25 meters long. Since the scarves are to be finished in a square shape, even the slightest distortion of the fabric is unacceptable, so this step requires extremely high precision.
In the subsequent printing process, they reportedly layer as many as 40 different dyes. The craftsmen fine-tune the dyes according to the temperature and humidity of the day, and then carefully apply each color one by one using a spatula called a "squeegee."
The final step is the "hand-rolled" finishing touch, which involves sewing the edges to create a plump, rounded shape. It is the accumulation of these meticulous processes, which leave no room for error, that brings out the deep colors and rich three-dimensionality in the fabric.

Scarves were once a common item that many people incorporated into their daily attire. However, as times changed, the habit of wearing them regularly gradually faded away. Eventually, scarves came to be associated primarily with uniforms for certain professions or with outdated fashion trends.
Now, scarves are once again gaining attention for their appeal. More and more people are picking up scarves as an item to enhance their individuality. They are being featured as a trend in overseas fashion magazines, and younger generations are also starting to incorporate them into their daily outfits with a fresh perspective.

Hair accessories such as headbands made from scarf fabric are also popular.
Even during times of declining demand, the "Traditional Yokohama Scarf Marca" has continued to project its appeal from iconic Yokohama locations such as Landmark Plaza and the Red Brick Warehouse. The unwavering commitment to quality has resonated with the modern need for individuality, leading to a solid reputation for the brand.

Scarves not only add a touch of elegance to an outfit, but they also possess high practicality. Their convenience is particularly evident when traveling. By using them not only around the neck but also as a wrap, you can reduce the amount of clothing you need to pack, making your luggage more compact. Another major advantage is their ability to easily regulate body temperature in air-conditioned spaces such as bullet trains and restaurants.
Yohei Endo, a director at Maruka Co., Ltd., says, "There is no right or wrong way to use a scarf. Don't overthink it; just enjoy it using your own instincts."
From everyday wear to travel essentials, the true charm of a scarf lies in its versatility and the way it can be enjoyed in a way that suits each individual's lifestyle.

At the "Traditional Yokohama Scarf Marca" store, you can directly experience the smooth texture of high-quality silk and the depth of color created by the multiple layers of handcrafted work. Even if you're unsure how to handle the scarves, the staff will suggest simple tying methods and various styling options, so you can try them out without hesitation.
In addition to scarves, the shop also offers a wide variety of original items perfect for small gifts or souvenirs, such as hand towels featuring Yokohama scenery. While experiencing the culmination of handcrafted work that has been carefully preserved in this port city, you're sure to find a unique piece that will add color to your everyday life.
