A moment to experience the atmosphere of the Meiji Restoration at a coffee shop on Bashamichi

A moment to experience the atmosphere of the Meiji Restoration at a coffee shop on Bashamichi

Located near Yokohama Port, Bashamichi began to flourish after the port was opened. Traces of the town's development as it adopted foreign cultures can still be seen today.

Just one street into the main street of this town is Bashamichi Jubankan. The exotic atmosphere makes you stop in your tracks. I visited the coffee shop on the first floor of the building.

I want to preserve the unique atmosphere of Bashamichi as a part of its culture.
Bashamichi Jubankan opened in 1970. The building, which has an atmosphere reminiscent of the Western-style buildings of that time, has a coffee shop on the first floor, a bar on the second floor, and a restaurant on the third floor.

Yamate Jubankan was built in the Yamate area in 1967. Bashamichi Jubankan was built three years later. We asked him about his thoughts from that time.

"It seems they wanted to cherish the culture of Yokohama. They have also taken good care of things since the company's founding. If you look closely, you can still find some precious items remaining."

Shortly after the opening of the port of Yokohama, Bashamichi was a road for horses, as its name suggests. The water fountain next to the entrance of the building was taken from another place at the time. The gas lamps, which are rarely seen these days, are also real.

It is still treasured as part of the building, with the feeling that it "must be preserved as part of our culture."

The firm pudding has the same taste as it always has.

The most popular pudding is "a little firm".

Hashed beef is also unique to Bashamichi Jubankan

"You can eat pork cutlets at Katsuretsuan right in front of you, and drink tea here. Your children can also eat cake and pudding. This has long been the full course meal for the people who live in this town."

The menu at the cafe has remained the same since the cafe first opened. The pudding, the cafe's most popular item, is a little firm and filling. Even if you're eating it for the first time, you'll feel a sense of nostalgia. The fresh cream used in the cakes and Vienna coffee is not too heavy, so it's easy to eat. The size of the pudding is also the same as when the cafe first opened.

"There are people who continue to come because they think that the appearance and taste are good. Just as we take good care of our objects, we make it a priority not to change our products."

The interior of the shop is spacious, which is becoming rare among coffee shops these days. With high ceilings, stained glass, and chairs that stand out in classic red, you can relax and enjoy your meal.

While new coffee shops are opening one after another and the nature of coffee shops is slowly changing, at Bashamichi Jubankan you can experience 100% pure retro style.

A place that is comforting to see how things continue to be treasured and unchanged

A shop owner who is also a local says, "It's comforting to see the town unchanged as it is constantly being renovated." He also says that some customers who used to come here with their families have returned as adults.

"Some people came because their grandmother used to bring them here a long time ago, and they really wanted to have their wedding photos taken here."

There are people who visit Bashamichi Jubankan, bringing back memories and memories of "those days." For those people, he says he wants to carry on the founder's passion and "continue to treasure it and continue it unchanged."

The wishes of its customers that it "remain unchanged" and the desire of Bashamichi Jubankan to "cherish its past" have come together, and it will continue to be a place of relaxation for people.
