![[For guests only] Welcome the New Year with a Kabuki Lion Performance and Photo Session](/uploads/discovery/2026/p3_260110162119.jpg)
In January, to celebrate the start of the new year, HOTEL RESOL KYOTO KAWARAMACHI SANJO will be hosting a Kabuki Lion Performance and Photo Session as a way of welcoming guests.
Kabuki is said to have begun in the early Edo period when Izumo no Okuni performed the "Kabuki Dance" in Shijo Kawaramachi, captivating the people of Kyoto. Close to the historic stage where Kabuki, which would later become a traditional performing art, was born, the powerful figure of a lion conveys the enthusiasm of the past to the present day.

Senju Einojo, the second head of the Senjuryu school
Since ancient times, lions have been said to be sacred beasts that ward off evil spirits and bring happiness. Their majestic appearance is an auspicious presence that gives strength to the hearts of those who see them.
This time, the person performing a unique performance in which he plays the shamisen while dressed as a lion will be Einojo Ogi, the second-generation head of the Ogi School of Japanese dance.
Ogiju has performed a variety of shows both in Japan and overseas incorporating not only traditional Japanese dance but also shamisen and hayashi music, captivating many audiences. He has also attracted attention for his unique activities, such as walking around town in a lion costume and interacting with local people.
"I want people to enjoy traditional performing arts without feeling intimidated or tense," says Ogiju. His words reveal his sincere desire to make people feel close to traditional Japanese performing arts.

"I'm a dancer, but I love the sound of the shamisen, and I hope you'll pay attention to that sound."
This event, which is filled with Senju's thoughts, will allow you to fully enjoy not only the gorgeous appearance of the lion, but also the charm of the shamisen as music.
The songs performed include "Osatsuma," a classic piece played when the lion appears on the Kabuki stage, and "Gion Kouta," a Kyoto-style song. It is a rare experience to be able to enjoy the different tones of the shamisen, both powerful and powerful, and the more mellow.
"Because we are so close to the audience, you will be able to smell the powder on their faces and even feel their breathing," says the host. Enjoying the sharp sound of the shamisen plectrum and the magnificently dressed lion from up close is a luxury that can only be experienced at this close distance.

After the performance, there will be time for fun interaction, including taking commemorative photos with Ogiju and a mini-game in which the winner will receive a shamisen performance CD.
"The lion's appearance itself is auspicious. Anyone who sees one is sure to have a good year," says Ogiju with a smile.
A bright and energetic performance befitting the start of a new year. Experience a special time experiencing the culture that has been cultivated for over 400 years and the splendor of the New Year, a memory that will stay with you long after your trip is over.
