Shizuya's "Kyo Karune" is a local favorite

"Shizuya" was founded in Kawaramachi, Kyoto in 1948. The store's name was taken from the name of the founder, Hori Makoto, and his wife, Shizuko.

Shizuya, which started with such a loving Mr. Hori, is now a popular restaurant with over 20 branches mainly in Kyoto City, with approximately 12,000 customers visiting every day.

Shizuya's signature dish is the "Kyoto Karune," a perennial favorite made of ham and onion sandwiched between German-style French bread and specially made margarine.

The second-generation president came across Sidewich (Kaiser Roll) by chance during a business trip to Germany, and this became the basis for Kyo Karune.

Ham, onion, margarine...Kyoto Karune is made with simple ingredients, and it was created through repeated trial and error in pursuit of the ultimate flavor. Every detail was carefully considered, from the way the margarine was spread to the way the ingredients were sandwiched in between the sandwich.
